When We Leave, They Grieve: Helping Pets Through Vacations & Time Apart

Packing your suitcase? Your pet already knows. Somehow, those furry detectives can spot the difference between “heading to work” and “heading on vacation” in a heartbeat. And let’s be honest those big eyes, droopy ears, or sassy tail flicks when you reach for the suitcase? Instant guilt trip.

Our pets may not understand why we leave, but they sure do notice when routines change. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a week-long trip, separation can leave them anxious, clingy, or a little mischievous (hello, shredded tissue box).

Tips to Ease the Distance:

  • Keep the routine alive: Ask sitters to stick to your feeding and playtime schedule. Pets find comfort in consistency.
  • Leave behind love: A blanket or shirt with your scent can be the ultimate snuggle buddy while you’re away.
  • Stay connected: If your sitter doesn’t mind, a quick video call can bring comfort to both sides. (Yes, your pet does recognize your voice!)
  • Enrichment is everything: Puzzle toys, chew treats, or cozy beds help distract them when they miss you most.

At the end of the day, leaving is hard but it’s also a reminder of how deeply our pets love us. When you walk back through the door, tails wag harder, purrs rumble louder, and suddenly you’re the hero of the story (suitcase forgiven).

Because while vacations may recharge us, coming home to our pets is the real highlight. 🐾💛
